How I Won the Week

When I was younger, I thought winning the week meant accomplishing something.
A promotion.

A goal.

A milestone.

A measurable result.

And while those things still matter, I’ve come to realize that some weeks are won in quieter ways.

This week, I spent time watching a pair of birds care for their nest in an avocado tree.

I walked in the rain when I would have preferred sunshine.

I sat by the ocean and reflected on moments I didn’t recognize as “the last time” until years later.

I filled a few pages in a notebook with thoughts that may never be published and don’t need to be.

None of those things would look impressive on a scoreboard.

Yet they felt important.

The older I get, the more I think winning a week has less to do with getting somewhere and more to do with noticing where we already are.

We spend so much of our lives rushing toward the next thing that we risk missing the
life unfolding directly in front of us.

This week reminded me to slow down.

To pay attention.

To appreciate things I’ve become accustomed to.

The people I love.

The places I enjoy.

The ordinary moments that quietly make up a good life.

So how did I win the week?

Not through achievement.

Through attention.

By staying present long enough to notice that life was already giving me plenty to be
grateful for.
